What Is Bitcoin Market State?
Price tells you what happened. Market State explains what’s changing underneath it.
Bitcoin Market State is Bitcoin’s current structural condition, determined by the interaction of Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership. It identifies whether Bitcoin is in Compression, Accumulation, Markup, Distribution, or Markdown.
Rather than beginning with price, Market State examines the forces driving it. The diagnosis shows where Bitcoin is structurally, whether that condition is changing, and how much confirmation the developing transition has earned.
Why Price Alone Isn’t Enough
Price tells you what Bitcoin is worth at a particular moment. It doesn’t tell you why that price exists or whether the forces supporting it are strengthening or weakening.
Bitcoin can rise while long-term holders distribute, Liquidity tightens, or demand becomes concentrated in a single channel. It can also move sideways while Supply contracts, Ownership broadens, and the conditions for a stronger advance quietly develop.
Market State separates price from structure. Price is the headline. Structure is the story.
What Determines Bitcoin’s Market State?
BTCIntelligence evaluates Bitcoin through three structural forces: Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership.
Supply
Supply shows whether Bitcoin is becoming more available for sale or moving into stronger hands. It examines exchange inventory, long-term-holder behavior, miner activity, profit-taking, and the age of coins being spent.
Liquidity
Liquidity shows whether the financial environment is supporting or constraining demand for Bitcoin. The Bitcoin Market State Framework uses the 30-Year Treasury as its primary Liquidity Governor, alongside Treasury cash, central-bank conditions, the dollar, and other supporting measures.
Ownership
Ownership shows who is accumulating Bitcoin and whether demand is broadening or weakening. It evaluates institutional funds, regional demand, large holders, smaller investors, and other observable changes in market participation.
No single measure determines Market State. The diagnosis comes from how Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership interact—and whether their movement has Magnitude, Persistence, and Breadth.
What Are Bitcoin’s Five Market States?
The Bitcoin Market State Framework organizes Bitcoin’s structural cycle into five conditions.
Compression
Market energy is constrained and direction remains unresolved. Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership haven’t aligned strongly enough to support a confirmed transition.
Accumulation
Bitcoin is gradually moving into stronger hands while selling pressure eases and demand begins broadening. Price may remain quiet or volatile while the underlying structure improves.
Markup
Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership have aligned strongly enough to support sustained expansion. Demand is absorbing available Bitcoin and the structural advance is confirmed.
Distribution
Earlier structural strength begins weakening as profit-taking increases, Supply becomes more available, or Ownership narrows. Price may remain elevated even while the underlying structure deteriorates.
Markdown
Selling pressure dominates, demand weakens, and restrictive conditions reinforce the decline. Bitcoin remains in Markdown until the deterioration begins compressing and the cycle prepares to reset.
These states describe Bitcoin’s structural condition—not a guaranteed price path or short-term trading signal.
What Is Transition Progress?
Transition Progress measures the strength of evidence that Bitcoin is moving from its current Market State toward another. It isn’t the probability that Bitcoin’s price will rise or fall.
The percentage increases when structural evidence strengthens across Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership with sufficient Magnitude, Persistence, and Breadth. It can hold or decline when improvement stalls, reverses, or remains confined to one variable.
Structural Confirmation
At 70%, the developing transition reaches Structural Confirmation. The destination Market State still hasn’t replaced the current state, but the evidence has become strong enough to recognize the transition as structurally established.
Formal Handoff
At 90%, the destination becomes Bitcoin’s official Market State. Until that threshold is reached, the existing Market State remains in force.
This distinction prevents one dramatic price move, one large fund inflow, or one favorable economic report from prematurely changing the diagnosis.
Step 7: Explain the confirmation tests
Add this below Transition Progress:
How Does BTCIntelligence Confirm a Structural Change?
Every important development is tested through Magnitude, Persistence, and Breadth.
Magnitude
Magnitude asks whether the change is large enough to matter. A minor daily movement may be normal variation, while a substantial movement can alter the structural balance.
Persistence
Persistence asks whether the change continues across multiple observations. One strong session can be meaningful, but repeated movement in the same direction carries greater structural weight.
Breadth
Breadth asks whether several independent measures confirm the same development. A change supported across Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership is stronger than one confined to a single indicator.
These tests reduce the risk of mistaking market noise for a genuine transition. The Framework advances only when the evidence—not the excitement surrounding it—earns the change.
How Can Investors Use Bitcoin Market State?
Bitcoin Market State gives investors a disciplined way to interpret changing conditions before making allocation, timing, or risk-management decisions.
In Accumulation, investors may focus on whether structural improvement is becoming confirmed. During Markup, they can watch for continued alignment among Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership. In Distribution, they can identify weakening conditions that price may not yet reflect. During Markdown or Compression, they can distinguish continuing deterioration from the early development of a new cycle.
Market State doesn’t tell investors exactly when to buy or sell. It provides context for making decisions without relying entirely on price, headlines, emotion, or short-term predictions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bitcoin Market State a price prediction?
No. Market State identifies Bitcoin’s current structural condition and the strength of any developing transition. Price may move before, after, or against the structure for a period of time.
Can Bitcoin’s price rise while its Market State weakens?
Yes. Price can continue rising while Supply becomes more available, Liquidity tightens, or Ownership narrows. This often explains why a market can appear strong even as its underlying support begins deteriorating.
Can Bitcoin remain in Compression while price is volatile?
Yes. Compression describes unresolved structure, not low price volatility. Bitcoin can move sharply while Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership remain too divided to confirm a new Market State.
How often is Bitcoin Market State evaluated?
BTCIntelligence evaluates Bitcoin’s structure daily. A new observation can change the balance, but formal transitions require evidence with sufficient Magnitude, Persistence, and Breadth.
What makes the Bitcoin Market State Framework different?
The Framework doesn’t begin with price or attempt to predict the next candle. It diagnoses Bitcoin through Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership, then measures how much structural confirmation a developing transition has earned.
The Bitcoin Market State Framework was created by Richard Rosdal and is the foundation of BTCIntelligence’s daily structural research. Learn more about the framework’s development and the thinking behind BTCIntelligence.

Understanding the Framework is the first step. Applying it requires evaluating how Supply, Liquidity, and Ownership are changing together—and whether the evidence has earned confirmation.
